Start from the largest supported static icon image.

ICNS can contain modern PNG images and older encodings. PerfectVector deliberately chooses one supported static representation instead of pretending the whole bundle is vectorized.

How ICNS is handled

  • The container length and bounded chunk table are validated locally before decoding.
  • Only embedded static PNG representations inside the safe pixel limits are candidates.
  • The largest pixel area wins; payload size and original order provide deterministic tie-breaking.

Keep ICNS for application packaging

BACKGROUND

When should you convert ICNS to SVG?

An ICNS file packages icon representations for different macOS display sizes. That bundle is useful for app delivery, but each stored representation is still raster artwork rather than a set of editable vector paths.

PerfectVector inspects the ICNS container locally and considers only supported static PNG representations. It chooses the largest pixel area; equal-size candidates are resolved by larger PNG payload and then original chunk order. The chosen image is decoded and normalized before the regular vectorization workflow begins.

Simple app marks, glyphs, logos, and flat interface symbols can become useful scalable artwork. Keep the original ICNS for macOS packaging, and expect to export fresh raster sizes from the SVG if you later need a new icon bundle.

Questions before you convert?

Which image does PerfectVector choose from an ICNS file?+
It selects the supported static PNG entry with the largest pixel area. If candidates have the same dimensions, it prefers the larger PNG payload and then the earlier original chunk order.
Does the SVG preserve every size stored in ICNS?+
No. One selected representation becomes the source for one resolution-independent SVG. Keep the original ICNS for macOS packaging and export any required raster sizes from the SVG separately.
Can PerfectVector decode an old ICNS file?+
Only when it contains a supported static PNG representation. Legacy JPEG 2000, PackBits, separate icon-mask layouts, malformed containers, and entries outside the safety limits are rejected before upload.
Will an animated PNG inside ICNS be converted?+
No. Animated PNG representations are excluded so animation cannot bypass the explicit frame-selection workflow. Export the intended still frame in a supported format if that image is the source you need.
Can SVG replace ICNS in a macOS application?+
Not directly. SVG can serve as an editable design master, but macOS application delivery still requires the appropriate raster representations and ICNS packaging produced by your icon workflow.
