Adobe Capture Vectorize Image: Make an Editable Shape

Use Adobe Capture to vectorize an image on your phone, refine the captured shape, save it to a Creative Cloud Library, and inspect the editable result.

Adobe Capture can vectorize an image on a phone, but the useful mental model is capture a reusable shape, not “restore the original artwork.” Point the camera at a high-contrast subject or choose an image, control how much detail survives, erase unwanted regions, and save the result to a Creative Cloud Library. You can then open the shape in a supported Adobe app and check the paths.

That distinction matters. A clean leaf, ink mark, stencil, or simple logo silhouette can become an efficient editable asset. A photograph with soft shadows, hair, reflections, and dozens of colors is more likely to become an interpretation that needs substantial repair.

The practical workflow
  1. Start with a flat, well-lit, high-contrast subject.
  2. Open Capture's Shapes workflow and frame or import the image.
  3. Use the detail control to remove noise without closing intentional holes.
  4. Capture the shape, then erase dust, background fragments, and unwanted regions.
  5. Let Capture draw the smooth outline and review it before saving.
  6. Save the asset to the correct Creative Cloud Library.
  7. Open it in Illustrator, Fresco, Photoshop, or another compatible app and inspect the actual geometry.
  8. Export from the receiving app only after the shape passes a path, hole, and scale check.

What Adobe Capture creates

Adobe describes Capture as a mobile vector converter that turns photos into design building blocks, including vector shapes. Its current Capture product page also says assets can be saved to Creative Cloud Libraries and reused in desktop and mobile apps.

For the Shapes workflow, Capture rebuilds visible boundaries as vector geometry. It does not recover the source file that existed before the pixels. You should not expect it to identify the original font, restore hidden layers, separate every object correctly, or recreate an illustrator's original Bézier curves.

Capture's current FAQ calls the output vector-based shapes and lists Shapes as compatible with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Animate, Premiere, Fresco, and Express. Compatibility does not guarantee identical editability in every destination. Open the asset in the app where you will actually finish it.

How to vectorize an image in Adobe Capture

1. Prepare the source before opening the app

Give the tracer a clear decision to make. Use even light, place the subject against a plain contrasting background, and keep the camera parallel to flat artwork. Crop away irrelevant objects. If you are importing an existing image, use the largest clean original rather than a social-media thumbnail or screenshot.

For paper artwork, avoid a hard lamp that creates a brightness gradient across the sheet. Capture may read the darker side as part of the shape. A sheet of white paper in soft window light is usually easier to separate than glossy paper under a point light.

2. Choose Shapes and set the detail

Adobe's current Capture-to-After Effects tutorial documents the basic sequence: open Capture, choose Shapes, point the camera at the object, and use the slider to add or remove image detail.

Move the control slowly and watch three areas:

  • the outer silhouette;
  • intentional holes, such as a letter counter or the space between stems;
  • small isolated marks that should disappear.

Do not maximize detail by default. Extra detail often means extra cleanup. Stop when the defining features survive and the background noise is gone.

3. Capture and remove unwanted regions

Take the capture only after the live preview is stable. Adobe's documented workflow then uses Deselect so you can brush over parts of the shape you do not want.

Remove obvious dust and detached fragments first. Then zoom in around narrow gaps and small holes. A tiny bridge between two areas can turn separate parts into one filled shape, while an erased sliver can break a contour that should remain closed.

4. Review the smoothed outline

When you continue, Capture draws smooth outlines for the shape. Treat this as a new reconstruction, not proof that the trace is finished. Compare it with the source at both close zoom and final use size.

Look for:

  • a changed silhouette around corners and tips;
  • holes that closed or became too small;
  • lumpy curves caused by shadows or compression;
  • detached islands that survived cleanup;
  • accidental asymmetry in a mark that should be balanced.

If a defining feature is wrong, go back and adjust the source or detail level. It is usually faster than repairing dozens of bad points later.

Capture is the first reconstruction step. The asset still needs a geometry check in the app where it will be edited or exported.

5. Save to the right Creative Cloud Library

Name the shape clearly and choose its destination library before saving. This small step prevents a common handoff problem: the vector exists, but nobody can find it in the expected project library.

Adobe's Capture FAQ says Creative Cloud sync makes Capture artwork available through supported Adobe apps and on the Creative Cloud assets website. If the shape does not appear, first confirm the Adobe account and selected library match in both apps, then allow sync to finish.

6. Inspect and export from the receiving app

Open the shape in the app used for finishing. In Illustrator or another path editor, select the artwork and confirm it behaves as vector geometry rather than a placed bitmap preview. Check that:

  • the important regions are editable;
  • the outline has no unexpected open ends;
  • holes remain transparent;
  • scaling does not reveal a hidden pixel image;
  • the number of points is reasonable for the required detail;
  • the color and fill behavior match the intended use.

Do not assume that saving an asset to a library is the same as downloading a production-ready SVG. Export options depend on the receiving application and workflow. After export, reopen the delivered file and inspect it. SVG can contain vector paths, but the format can also contain embedded raster images; the SVG specification's embedded-content section is why checking the file structure matters.

Can Adobe Capture make a color vector?

Adobe's current FAQ includes a separate color-shape workflow, and the product page describes turning images into scalable vector assets. That makes Capture more capable than a strictly black-and-white silhouette tool.

Still, color does not remove the need for judgment. A flat illustration with a few distinct regions is a more realistic candidate than a photograph full of gradients. Inspect whether the colors became useful editable regions or a stack of fragments. If the latter happens, reduce the source complexity or use a workflow designed for complete image reconstruction.

Choose based on the job after tracing. If you are photographing a stamp mark at a workbench and need it in a shared library, Capture is a natural fit. If you need precise control over a complex trace, use Illustrator. If you want to test a full raster image outside the Adobe ecosystem, compare a dedicated vectorizer on the same source.

Fix common Adobe Capture tracing problems

The result has too many specks

Use softer, more even light and simplify the background. Lower the captured detail until dust disappears without erasing the subject. Cleaning the paper or source image before tracing is better than deleting hundreds of vector islands afterward.

Thin gaps keep closing

Increase contrast around the gap and capture from closer without introducing blur. If the gap is essential, redraw that small section in the receiving editor rather than forcing the entire trace to preserve every tiny pixel variation.

Curves look wobbly

Start with a larger, sharper source and reduce irrelevant detail. Shadows, JPEG halos, and shaky camera focus all become edge evidence. Simplify only points that do not change the intended silhouette.

The shape is missing in the desktop app

Check the signed-in Adobe account, the library chosen during save, network sync, and whether that destination app supports Shape assets. Adobe's compatibility table is asset-specific; an app that supports one Capture asset type may not support all of them.

The exported SVG still contains pixels

Inspect the file in a vector editor and, when necessary, its markup. A raster image wrapped inside an SVG is still raster content. Confirm that the subject is represented by editable paths before treating it as a scalable master.

Can Adobe Capture vectorize an image? Yes. Capture can turn a photo or imported image into a vector-based Shape asset. The result reconstructs visible boundaries; it does not restore original layers, fonts, or hidden geometry.

Can I edit a Capture shape in Illustrator? Yes. Adobe lists Illustrator among the apps that support Capture Shape assets. After opening the asset, inspect its paths, holes, point count, and fills before using it as a production master.
